Corn - The condition of the 2025 U.S. corn crop declined and is now rated 70% good/excellent, which represents a decrease of 2% compared to the prior week. Nine states indicated that the corn condition improved last week, and 9 states indicated that the corn condition declined last week. Most of the improvements were generally found in the northern locations while most of the declines were found in the southern locations. The top five rated corn states are: North Carolina, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The five lowest rated corn states are: Texas, North Dakota, Michigan, Colorado, and Indiana.

A decline in the corn condition this week was a bit of a surprise. I would attribute the decline to the excessive heat over the weekend just as the crop scouts were making their observations.

Soybeans - The condition of the 2025 U.S. soybean crop is rated 66% good/excellent which is unchanged compared to the prior week. Seven states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week, 9 states indicated that the soybean condition declined last week, and 2 remained unchanged. Most of the improvements were found in the southern locations while most of the declines were found in the central and northern locations. The top five rated soybean states are: Mississippi, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

The soybeans seem to have taken the heat over the weekend better than the corn probably because many of the soybeans are still small and have a lower water requirement compared to corn. Additionally, some the soybeans have not yet emerged.

Soil Moisture - The nation's topsoil moisture declines last week with 6 states indicating improved soil moisture and 12 states indicating lower soil moisture. Most of the improvements were found in the northern corn belt while most of the declines were found in the central corn belt. The five states with the highest soil moisture are: Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: South Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa.

Rainfall over the weekend favored the northern Plains and the northwestern Midwest. As the heat dome moves east and breaks down, rains should favor southern Minnesota, Iowa, southern Wisconsin, Michigan, eastern Nebraska, and northeastern Kansas.
