The safrinha corn harvest in Brazil continues to get off to a slow start due to persistent rains that are resulting in high seed moisture. The corn harvest in Brazil is 13% compared to 34% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 7.8% for the week. In Brazil it is estimated that only 15% of the farmers in Brazil have on-farm storage, much less drying facilities, so they do not have the capacity to dry the corn. They prefer to leave the corn drydown in the field instead of paying for drying.

Mato Grosso - The Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea) reported that as of late last week, farmers in the state had harvested 14% of their safrinha corn compared to 37.5% last year and 26.7% average. This represents an advance of 6.8% for the week.

Local dignitaries conducted a ceremonial opening of the corn harvest in the city of Sorriso, Mato Grosso, last Friday. The municipality of Sorriso is the largest soybean and corn producing municipality in Brazil. According to Imea, Mato Grosso will produce 3% more corn than the 48.7 million tons produced in 2023/24. Farmers in the state planted 7 million hectares of corn in 2024/25 (17.2 million acres) with an estimated statewide yield of 117.7 sacks per hectare (112.2 bu/a), which is up 1.8% compared to last year.

The weather benefited the crop during the entire growing season. Rainfall continued until the end of May, which was especially beneficial for the corn planted after the ideal planting window had closed at the end of February.

Parana - According to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral), farmers in Parana had harvested 8% of their safrinha corn as of late last week. The remaining corn is 3% pollinating, 43% filling grain, and 54% maturing. The corn is rated 13% poor, 20% average, and 67% good. The safrinha corn harvest is progressing slowly in Parana due to recent rain and high seed moisture.
