Rainfall last week and over the weekend favored central and southern Brazil. The rain led to improvements in soil moisture for the southern safrinha corn, but it slowed soybean harvesting in Rio Grande do Sul. Rainfall should increase over much of Brazil this week, which is good news for the safrinha corn.

Nationwide, the safrinha corn was rated at 2.9% emerging, 66.8% in vegetative development, 28.7% pollinating, and 1.6% filling grain as of earlier last week. The southern safrinha corn received rainfall last week and over the weekend helping to recharge the soil moisture. The late planted safrinha corn in the southern area will need rain through at least the end of May to ensure adequate yields.

The first corn crop was 51.3% harvested as of earlier last week compared to 59.2% last year and 51% average.

Safrinha corn in Parana was rated 4% poor, 11% average, and 85% good as of earlier last week according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral). This is a decline from the previous week due to water deficits recorded in recent weeks. Corn in Parana is 67% in vegetative development, 23% pollinating, and 4% filling grain. The state received rainfall over the weekend and there is more in the forecast.

In the April WASDE Report, the Brazilian corn estimate was left unchanged at 132.0 million tons.
