Conab Issues Correction for 2021/22 Brazilian Corn Production

In their May Crop Report released last Thursday, May 12th, Conab indicated that the 2021/22 corn production in Brazil would increase 0.6 million tons from 115.6 million in April to 116.2 million in May. That apparently was an error, which they corrected late Thursday.
Conab is now estimating that the 2021/22 Brazil corn crop at 114.58 million tons, which is down 1.0 million tons from the April estimate.
The mistake was in the safrinha corn acreage. In the original report, Conab indicated that the safrinha corn acreage increased 560,000 hectares (1,300,000 acres) in May compared to April. In the corrected report, Conab indicated that the safrinha corn acreage increased 240,000 hectares (592,000 acres) in May compared to April.
In the corrected report, they also adjusted the safrinha corn yield. The original report indicated a safrinha corn yield of 85.5 bu/ac (down 2.2 bu/ac from April). The corrected report, they indicated a safrinha corn yield of 85.6 bu/ac (down 2.1 bu/ac from April).
In their May Crop Report, Conab increased their estimate for Brazil's 2021/22 soybean crop by 1.4 million tons from 122.4 million to 123.8 million tons.
Brazil's 2021/22 soybean acreage was increased slightly from last month to 40.9 million hectares (101.0 million acres), which represents an increase of 4.4% compared to last year. Brazil's soybean yield is now estimated at 3,026 kg/ha (45.0 bu/ac), which is up 0.3 bu/ac from last month, but still down 14.1% compared to last year. Brazil's soybean production at 123.8 million tons represents a reduction of 10.4% from last year's production of 138.1 million tons.
