Aprosoja Lowers Mato Grosso Corn 4 Million Tons to 36 Million

The Soybean and Corn Producers Association of Mato Grosso (Aprosoja-MT) lowered their estimate of the 2021/22 safrinha corn production in the state by 4 million tons to 36 million. Over 90% of the safrinha corn in the state was planted within the ideal planting window, but the weather turned dryer starting in March with some areas of the state going more than 50 days without a significant rain. The hardest hit areas appear to be western and southern Mato Grosso.

Final yield results will not be known until the corn is harvested starting in June. The near-term forecast is calling for below normal temperatures and continued dry conditions. Recent temperatures have been record low in the 40's°F and there may even be some light frosts in the far southeast corner of the state. The corn losses are irreversible and any precipitation from this point forward will not add back any yield.

Other areas of central Brazil such as Goias, northern Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, and the Federal District have also experienced dry conditions since the second half of March and record low temperatures Thursday morning, which fell into the mid-30's°F.

Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil responsible for more than 40% of Brazil's total safrinha corn production.
