Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

About a quarter of the corn in Argentina will be planted early and conditions have hot been good for the crop. Approximately three quarters of the corn will be planted late and the weather conditions for the late-planted corn is yet to be determined although late planted corn usually yields 10-15% less than early planted corn.

The weather improved in Argentina last week and farmers focused their efforts on planting soybeans. The corn crop in Argentina was 23.6% planted as of late last week compared to 29.2% last year and 35.8% average. This represents an advance of only 0.2% for the week. In the core production area, the corn is approximately 70% planted with 20-40% planted in southern Argentina and 0% planted in far northern Argentina. The early corn is 56% planted.

The corn is rated 28% poor/very poor, 61% fair, and 11% good/excellent. The good/excellent percentage is up 2 points from the prior week. This marks two consecutive weeks of improved rating for the corn. The soil moisture for the corn is rated 34% short/very short and 66% favorable/optimum. The favorable/optimum percentage is up 8 points from the prior week.

Planting of the late corn should start in about two weeks and conclude in mid-January. Approximately 70-75% of the 2022/23 corn in Argentina will be planted late and late planted corn usually yields 10-15% less than early planted corn, but the weather will determine the eventual corn yield.
