2023/24 Brazil Safrinha Corn 100% Planted

Brazil's safrinha corn is now 100% planted and the concern for the safrinha corn is the weather in south-central Brazil especially Parana, southern Mato Grosso do Sul, Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais. This area had been dryer-than-normal for the last several weeks and rainfall last week and over the weekend only resulted in partial relief. Dryness will likely increase this week in the southern safrinha area.
The first corn crop in southern Brazil is 75% harvested compared to 58% last year. This represents an advance of 7% for the week.
Mato Grosso - The safrinha corn in Mato Grosso is 100% planted. The earlier planted corn is pollinating or beyond while the later planted corn is in vegetative development. The rainfall has been irregular but generally beneficial for the safrinha corn in the state.
Parana - Safrinha corn planting in the state was 96% complete earlier last week compared to 77% last year. This represents an advance of 5% for the week. The safrinha corn is rated 8% average and 92% good. In general, the safrinha corn was planted within the ideal planting window which should reduce the risk of frost before the crop is mature, especially in western and southern Parana where the potential frost risk is greatest.
Farmers are expected to plant 2.4 million hectares of safrinha corn, which is down 2.6% compared to last year. Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil responsible for 15.2% of the 2023/24 acreage. Mato Grosso is the largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil with 42% of the acreage.
Rondonia - Embrapa researchers expects the safrinha corn acreage in the state to decline 40% due to low corn prices and delayed planting. Conab is not as pessimistic concerning the safrinha corn acreage. They estimated that farmers in the state would plant 261,000 hectares of safrinha corn (-9.5%) and the state would produce1.3 million tons of corn (-11.2%).
